Chapter Fifteen

I know I don’t have much time. Whoever that poor trapped soul is, he doesn’t know what he has gotten himself into.

Unless he is a bounty hunter.

That is also a possibility. After all, he wouldn’t be the first and probably not the last bounty hunter who came here, hoping to bring back a worthy kill, only to find that he was not prepared for what awaited him here. Whoever he is, he doesn’t stand a chance if I don’t help him. I know I’m risking a lot, but I can’t let an innocent man be killed just for being a human. It stands against everything I believe in.

This morning, we are having fight lessons, in the underground bunker. All the vampires will be there. Wallock is the one who is overseeing them, and those two guys are with him. That means that only Cassius will remain unaccounted for, including the cooks, who won’t be leaving the kitchen anyway.

This is crazy. I know it is. I should just let the guy get what’s coming to him, whatever that is. Death, I’m sure. But I just can’t. I have to go through this elaborate plan to set him free, even risk getting caught while doing so. But I know that if he escapes, that will leave Cassius unfocused. His mind will be on him, and not on me. My own plan to steal his ring might go more smoothly if there is something wrong, something to occupy his mind, so he won’t be able to see what I’m doing.

A part of me doesn’t think this will work. But I have to try. The best way to do this would be to use my cream on the guy and just walk him out of the Academy, without anyone being the wiser. It seems so easy to be almost crazy. And it is. If only I had enough cream for us both, which I don’t. So, scratch that theory.

My second option is to try and mask his scent as much as I can with mud, excrement and any plant that has a potent smell. The combination of that might get him out. It’s not bullet proof, but it’s the only option I have left.

I take some of my valerian root and put it in the backpack, along with some clothes that all of us are wearing. Luckily, they’re the same, so if the vampires don’t smell him, they might not recognize that he’s not one of them if they see him passing by, which I hope will not happen. I press the side of my hair, to check for my hairpins. They will allow me to unlock the door. I didn’t have them on me when Cassius threw me into the hole. They were left in my backpack, which was taken from me, but luckily given back once I proved myself worthy… I guess. I don’t know how else to call it.

In any case, I should focus on this now. I have already excused myself from the fights, saying that I have a stomachache.
